Enclosure Temperature as an Indicator of System Health - Unisun

Enclosure Temperature as an Indicator of System Health

Electrical enclosures rarely fail unexpectedly. Before an unplanned shutdown there are usually signs of inadequate thermal management: internal temperatures higher than expected, components under constant stress, and reduced performance of installed devices. Fandis therefore suggests treating the temperature of an enclosure as an indicator of overall system health, not just a side effect of operation.

Common causes of overheating

  • Incorrect sizing. An enclosure dimensioned only on nominal values can struggle when real conditions are harsher, for example, after longer production cycles, higher loads, or later system changes.
  • Poor heat removal. Temperature depends on the heat produced by components and on how well the enclosure can shed it. Insufficient ventilation, clogged filters, weak heat exchange, or a poor internal layout let heat build up unnoticed.
  • Localized hot spots. Loose connections and overloaded components or devices running near their limits can cause local temperature rises that accelerate wear and reduce reliability.

From occasional checks to active control

Checking temperature from time to time is not enough. Fandis recommends monitoring and controlling internal conditions so that thermal management follows what the system actually needs. Intelligent dynamic ventilation adjusts airflow to the internal temperature and operating conditions, preventing overheating while avoiding unnecessary continuous ventilation.

Preventive checklist

  • Does the actual load match the original sizing?
  • Is the internal temperature compatible with the installed components?
  • Does the ventilation respond to changes in operating conditions?
  • Are any areas running hotter than the rest of the enclosure?
  • Does maintenance catch critical issues before they cause a shutdown?
